The Ohio State University Marching Band Alumni are pleased to offer a marching and sightseeing adventure to the British Isles in conjunction with the annual Miners’ Gala held in Durham, England. Come along and join your fellow Alumni Band members on this exciting adventure to the United Kingdom.
Wednesday, July 6, 2011- USA to Manchester, England
Depart your home city to Manchester, England with meal service en route for all Trans-Atlantic flights. If you are making your own flight arrangements, you will need to arrive in Manchester no later than 9:00 a.m. on July 7th to be included in the motor coach transportation to Manchester/Durham.
Thursday, July 7-Manchester to Durham
Arrive in Manchester in the morning and clear UK Customs and Immigration. After you have claimed your luggage and exited Customs and Immigration, you will be met and directed to the banks for currency exchange and then to the motor coaches for departure to Manchester and Durham.
We will begin a guided tour of Manchester to see the highlights of the city and then we are off to the Yorkshire Mining Museum for a short visit and then on to our hotel in Durham with a late afternoon arrival planned. We will be staying at the Royal County Marriott Hotel in Durham with dinner included this evening. Rehearsal will follow dinner and will be held in one of the meeting rooms of the Marriott Hotel. (D)
Friday, July 8-Durham
English buffet breakfast is included at the hotel. Today will include an optional ($) excursion combining the beautiful countryside of the Yorkshire dales (famed as the ‘Herriot Country’ after the veterinarian writer James Herriot who set his books here) with the historic city of York. The route will include Richmond, one of Yorkshire’s loveliest small towns, Bedale, Thirsk and the ancient city of York. In York, we will meet our local guide for a walking tour of the medieval city walls, entrance to the Minster (Cathedral) and the quaint sector known as ‘Shambles’. There will be free time to enjoy browsing and shopping in York prior to our return. Evening performance and dinner in Bowburn. Return to the hotel. (B and D)
Saturday, July 9-Durham
Breakfast is included at the hotel this morning. After breakfast, depart by motor coach to Bowburn for short parade through the village and then back to Durham for the start of the Miners’ Gala Parade and festivities. At the fairgrounds, there will be time for lunch on your own prior to marching out of the fairgrounds and return to the hotel.
OPTIONAL ($) Newcastle on the Tyne Dinner Cruise -- depart Durham by motor coach around 6:00 pm for a short motor coach ride to Newcastle to take a 7:30 p.m., three hour cruise on the Tyne with a delicious barbeque dinner prepared on board and a cash bar. Enjoy music hosted by a DJ during the cruise with return to the pier around 10:30 p.m. with arrival back to the hotel around 11:15 p.m. (B)
Sunday, July 10-Durham to Manchester
Breakfast included at the hotel this morning. One group will depart by motor coach for Barnsley, England to participate in the Old Silkstone March Contest and then straight to Manchester. The other group will depart by motor coach through the Lake District, which is a very scenic drive, with stops to visit scenic cities along the way. There are no actual admissions included but there will be time to enjoy the cities along the way which are quaint and historic. Arrival at the Britannia Hotel in downtown Manchester late afternoon. Dinner on own this evening (B)

Monday, July 11-Manchester to Liverpool and St. Helens and back to Manchester
English buffet breakfast is included at the hotel this morning. After breakfast, depart by motor coach to Liverpool. You will need to take along your instrument since there will be a concert this evening with the St. Helens Youth Band. We will tour Liverpool with a guide and see some of the famous Beatles sites. The Beatles Museum is OPTIONAL ($) and has an additional cost. Following the tour and free time in Liverpool, we will depart by motor coach to St. Helens, England for a dinner provided by St. Helens Youth Band and then a performance. Following the performance, return to the Manchester Hotel. (B and D)
Tuesday, July 12-Manchester to USA
Breakfast is once again included at the hotel. After breakfast, those returning home to the USA will depart for the Manchester Airport for their flights to their home USA City.
LONDON Extension
Tuesday July 12-to London
Those extending to London depart by motor coach with stops in Stratford-on-Avon to enjoy the city centre on your own and also a stop in Oxford to enjoy Oxford on your own.
Arrive in London late afternoon and check into the Jurys Inn Chelsea Hotel. Balance of evening at leisure and dinner on own. (B)
Wednesday, July 13-Friday, July 15, 2011-London
Breakfast will be provided in the hotel each morning. During our stay in London, if there is enough interest, we will provide the following OPTIONAL ($) tours by motor coach including admission to the major attractions and a guided tour:
- Full Day to Dover and Canterbury and Leeds Castle -- depart the hotel around 8:30 a.m. by motor coach with a tour guide; tour will include admission to Leeds Castle, entry to Canterbury Cathedral, view of the White Cliffs of Dover, Dover Castle and the Naval College and Observatory in Greenwich. Return to the hotel around 6:30 p.m.
- Full Day to Windsor Castle, Stonehenge and Bath -- depart the hotel around 8:00 a.m. by motor coach with tour guide for full day trip to Windsor (approx one and one half hours at Windsor) and see the State Apartments and St. George’s Chapel; then on to Stonehenge with admission included; and then on to Bath with admission to the Roman Ruins included with time to enjoy the beautiful city of Bath. Return to the hotel around 7:00 p.m.
- Half Day to Windsor Castle -- depart the hotel around 9:00 a.m. for half day tour to Windsor Castle with about two hours at the Castle and visit to Runnymede which is where the Magna Carta was signed. Return to the hotel around 1:00 p.m.
- Optional play -- hopefully new “Wizard of Oz” by Andrew Lloyd Webber
If you are interested in any of these, please note your interest on the registration form. You can easily do the city tour of London by local sightseeing companies and include the “Changing of the Guard”.
Other than breakfast daily, meals are on your own.
Saturday, July 16
Breakfast included at the hotel. After breakfast, we will depart for Heathrow Airport and our return flights to the USA. We will most likely depart the hotel early since most of the flights we will be using will be in the 11 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. timeframe. If you arrange your own transportation outside of this time frame, you will have to get to Heathrow Airport on your own. Lunch will be served en route to the USA.
This brings to an end the trip to the United Kingdom and we are sure you will enjoy this adventure with fellow Alumni Band Members and the hospitality of the United Kingdom.
Travel Notes:
- Non-Columbus Airfares – Please contact Reynolds Travel for current airfare prices from cities other than Columbus. These airfares need to be paid in full at time of purchase, as your deposit, to lock in the price and are non-refundable.
- These tickets can be used for up to one year from date of travel but there will be an airline service charge assessed for the exchange along with any additional cost for the new air itinerary.
- If you are using Frequent Flyer miles or arranging your own air transportation:
- You will need to arrive at the Manchester Airport no later than 9:00 a.m. on July 7th to catch the motor coach transportation.
- On the return flight from Manchester, leaving July 12th, motor coach transportation to the airport will be based on flight departure times of 9-10 a.m. from the Manchester Airport.
- On the return flight from London, leaving July 16th, motor coach transportation to the airport will be based on flight departure times of 11 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. from the Heathrow Airport.
- There may be extra time provided at the airport since we need to plan a departure time for the majority of the flyers.
- You will need a valid Passport that will not expire within 6 months of your return date to the USA.
- OPTIONAL ($) – Optional activity with additional cost. Please see registration form for cost.
Deposits/Final payments:
- Deposit is due at time of enrollment, by November 30, 2010.
- Final payment will be due on May 6, 2011.
Refunds:
- The $300 deposit is fully refundable up to final payment time less a service charge of $25 per person.
- For travelers not flying out of Columbus but purchasing air travel through Reynolds Travel, see Travel Notes above regarding your deposit information.
- The land package is non-refundable after final payment.
